Fear Free Veterinary Hospital Project
Design a Veterinary Hospital that will, through design, ease the typical stress and anxiety associated with a trip to the Veterinary Hospital for both dogs and cats. The Veterinary Hospital needs to address both the user experience as well as the medical facility as the primary function of the Veterinary Hospital.
A Veterinary Hospital can be defined as a medical facility that caters to animals in order to maintain healthy and happy pets. “They provide passionate and professional health care practitioners, a 24hr care unit, prescribe correct medication and have specialized medical equipment to provide medical procedures like general surgery, dental, x-ray and sonar scans” This research will be used within the design process, together creating a peaceful, productive and efficient Veterinary Hospital as well as a retail store.
The design will specifically address how environmental factors could be used and designed to alleviate stress and anxiety in dogs and cats. These factors b eing the materials, lighting, color and sound, these factors can be designed in a specific way to help create a more pleasant and comfortable environment for the dogs and cats as w ell as their owners. Defined zones within the Veterinary Hospital need to be created where different activities will be held, this also affects where the Fear Free design will be concentrated as some area are much more stressful than others depending on the behavior of the pet and the surrounding environment. The area’s that will have the most Fear Free d esign applied to it are the Waiting room, Reception, Exam Rooms as well as the Kennels and Cattery which include some boarding facilities.

In celebration of colour, design and creativity, South Africa’s leading paint company, Plascon, has launched an exciting new competition that will demonstrate how creative thinkers have the ability to make a positive impact on the built environment.
Known as the Plascon Colour Design Awards, the competition has grown out of the previous Plascon Prism Awards, which Plascon supported for several years as part of its ongoing commitment to further the architectural and design industries. The new Plascon Colour Design Awards 2014 will be held for the first time this year and are aimed at both students and professionals alike.
The theme of the Plascon Colour Design Awards 2014 is “Uplift” and uplifting neglected social spaces is central to the competition. Which is why it was selected as one of 450 officially recognized projects on the World Design Capital 2014 programme. The World Design Capital 2014 carries the slogan “Live Design. Transform Life.” Similarly, the aim of Plascon’s awards is to show that urban spaces can be positively transformed through the use of design and colour, and how this makes a real difference in the daily lives of the people who use that space.
